We all need a Simon. A Simon the Cyrenian, that it is.

When Jesus couldn’t carry his cross any longer on the way to Calvary, Simon jumped in and helped him carry it. Even Jesus needed someone to help Him.

Do we have a Simon in our life? Someone who helps us carry our cross? Someone who helps us get through the daily grind of life?

My husband Chris is my Simon. He is strong, wise, and unconditionally supportive. I know, every day, whatever cross I have to carry, he will help me carry it. For example, when I sit down to talk to him about an issue that I am having, no topic is off limits, no comment left unsaid. He will listen and support me, unconditionally.

Here are some tips to become a “Simon” or to help find you a “Simon” in your life.

1). JUDGE NOT

This is very important. When we talk to someone about our problems, fears, insecurities, trust is vital. Chances are we are not going to confide in someone if we feel like we are going to be judged, blamed, or not feel heard. Being vulnerable is difficult for most of us, so listening without judgment is crucial.

2). LISTEN UP!

If someone confides in you, listen. Most people are not looking for advice or guidance, but rather, someone who can listen and validate their voice. Be patient and don’t interrupt. Try not to be distracted by social media.

3). BE A CHEERLEADER

Some days are difficult for us all. We all need a cheerleader in our corner who will motivate us and be positive. Someone to remind us that everything will be alright.

4). BE KIND

Our words have power. They have the power to bring joy or sadness. Use your words wisely.

5). DON’T ASK FOR ANYTHING IN RETURN

After Simon carried the cross for Jesus he didn’t turn around and say “Look what I did for you!” We shouldn’t either. Helping someone carry their cross is a gift for them AND CANVAfor us. Don’t retract it.

6). BE EMPATHETIC

Being a “Simon” is about suffering with that person. It’s about allowing that person to suffer without feeling the need to “fix” it for them. Put yourself in their shoes, how would  you want them to help you carry your cross?

7). BE PATIENT

Be there for them by allowing them to resolve their issue in their own time. This takes patience. Have faith that they will figure it out in their own timing.

8). PRAY FOR THEM

Pray for their journey. We all need help carrying our cross and prayer is pivotal in the process.
