Prayer, fasting, and alms giving are the main pillars of Lent. These seem like a heavy load to carry, especially with our busy lives and never ending to do lists.
But, rest assured, they are not as daunting as they may seem. These simple tips will help us to carry our cross, alongside Jesus, as we wait for the beautiful resurrection of our Lord. Read below for these simple tips for how to grow closer to Jesus during lent.
It says in the bible to “Pray without ceasing!” (1 Thessalonians 5-16). Praying can be done all of the time, anywhere you go. Sometimes I say small prayers when my son is crying or having a tantrum such as “Jesus give me patience.” And sometimes I say the rosary for extra help with a specific problem. Sometimes I have a conversation with Jesus about my frustrations and I simply ask Him for help.
Mindfulness is also a powerful prayer. Just being aware of Jesus’ presence throughout the day can get you through any situation. Meditation is also a beautiful and simple way to pray as well as to stop and collect your thoughts….and rest (a cup of coffee or nice glass of wine will help too).
Stopping, counting our blessings, and being grateful for the gifts that He has given us is a wonderful way to say thank you. Contemplating His presence is a beautiful prayer.
This could be as simple as offering up your favorite dessert or a piece of candy. This can also qualify as “giving something up” during Lent.
Many churches and donation centers have specific items they are in need of. Call your local donation store or check your church bulletin. Next time you are at the grocery store, throw in a few of those items. Many of the items needed can be found on the clearance rack. Dollar stores are also great places to buy donations and help others in need.
Another great way to serve is to make a meal for a friend who may have a sick relative, or visit someone that could use a friendly smile. These are small and large ways to incorporate service into our daily lives during lent.
Try to focus on one of these for the remainder of lent. Jesus appreciates any sacrifice you make.
“If you did it for the least of my brothers you did it for me!” (Matthew 25: 40-45).
